20 Essential Digital Marketing Terms

Ever wonder what certain phrases or words mean when you’re talking about marketing? We’re here to help!

We are breaking down 20 of the most common and essential digital marketing terms for you to know

A

  1. A/B Testing (or Split Testing)– One of many digital marketing terms for when a marketer tests two different, but similar, versions of an ad to determine which one performs better. Some common things that are changed to test are visuals, ad copy and type of media (e.g., video or images).

  1. Automation– In marketing terms, an advertiser can set up automations to simulate communication between themselves and the prospective customer. An essential part of lead nurturing, it often includes setting up email or text campaigns to follow up with potential or current customers.

C

  1. Click-Through Rate (CTR)– The percentage of users who click on a specific link or view a page, email, or ad. You can analyze the CTR for every step of the customer journey to see how many users move from step to step and how many drop off.
  1. CPA (Cost Per Acquisition)– The cost to acquire one paying customer. When an advertiser uses this pricing model, they pay for every acquisition (sale, form submission, etc.) the campaign generates.
  1. CPC (Cost Per Click)– The cost of every click on an ad (also called pay per click). When an advertiser uses this pricing model, they pay every time someone clicks on the ad, regardless of any action taken beyond that.
  1. CPL (Cost Per Lead)– The cost of every sign-up or opt-in. When advertisers use this pricing model, they pay for every consumer who provides their lead information after opting into the offer.
  1. CTA (Call to Action)– A statement where you tell your audience what they should do after viewing your ad (e.g., Buy now! Click the button to sign up for x, etc.).

I

  1. Impressions- According to Sprout Social, it is “the number of times your content is displayed, no matter if it was clicked or not.”

L

  1. Landing Page – A single page on your website where an advertisers direct leads to. For martial arts, this will often be the program page where a lead will put their information in.
Example of a landing page for a martial arts school.
  1. Lead Generation– According to Marketo, it is “the marketing process of stimulating and capturing interest in a product or service… to develop a sales pipeline.”
  1. Lead Magnet– Any advertiser’s incentive to encourage prospective customers to enter their lead information (Name, phone number and email). This incentive could be a free webinar, a course, or any content that the prospective buyer would want relating to your business. For example, at Grow Pro, we offer a free Internet Marketing Guide to prospects who enter their lead information.
  1. Lead Nurturing– Developing a relationship with your prospective or current customers through every step of the customer journey.

O

  1. Opt-In– One of many digital marketing terms for when a user gives an advertiser permission to follow up. An opt-in comes in many forms and can apply to many things, like receiving more information or joining an email list.
  1. Organic Traffic – People who view your online pages (social media, website, etc.) that did not find it through advertising. The opposite of paid traffic.

R

  1. Remarketing- True to the name, it’s about showing your ads to people that have already interacted with your content or ads.

S

  1. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – A series of techniques to help you appear higher on the search engine results page (SERP) without paying. Ads will always appear first, but content optimized for search engines will appear just below the ads.
  1. “Smarketing”– Integrating your sales and marketing for maximum lead generation.
  1. Social Selling– Building rapport and forging relationships as part of the sales process.

T

  1. Targeting- Directing your ads to specific types of people that fall into certain categories. For example, parents are a common target audience in the martial arts industry.
